WHY WE HOST GOLF WITH A VET
There is a large Veteran Community in this area, and there are many needs. As we continue to look out for our senior Veterans, I would like to make an emphasis on the young Combat Veteran who trained for their job so well, lost so many close friends in Combat, and came home wondering if their sacrifice was worth it. I am speaking of Veterans of Operation Desert Storm and Desert Shield, as well as Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom, both Active Duty, Reserve Units and the National Guard.
The primary focus of Golf with a Vet is to help stop Veteran Suicide. We will never know for sure how much we have helped, but whether you know it or not, it is taking place around us here in the Valley. Nationwide we are looking at 22 per day, some say that is really about 40 as drug related deaths are not counted.
I have listed the Veteran Groups that we have donated to this year on the back of this letter. We truly hope to do more than this in the year ahead. There is a small amount of last year's profit available to donate from Golf with a Vet 2023 that we are keeping for an emergency, that will be donated by September 1 of this coming year. This is our 4th annual “Golf with a Vet”, total donations to date exceed $125,000. The need is great.
I want to tell you about a special group of Combat Veterans from the recent Iraq and Afghanistan Wars. Old Glory Honor Flight took them to New York for a 4 day, 3 night visit. This was the first “Freedom to Liberty Tour, Mission of Healing”. They toured ground zero and visited with members of the NYPD and NYFD as well as the Port Authority. The coming together of this group brought new meaning to the deployment of these Veterans. We would like to see this Old Glory Honor Flight Continue for our Combat Veterans.
VFW POST 3319, GOLF WITH A VET, 2023
DONATED DOLLARS AND WHY DO WE DONATE TO THE VETERAN GROUPS BELOW
Fox Valley Veteran Council- $15,000 Applicants are vetted by Leaven and an honorably discharged veteran many times is referred to Fox Valley Veterans Council, they can help with dire needs. The check is always written out to the specific need, not the Veteran.
Habitat for Humanity, Veteran Home Repair Fund-$5000 This program was new in 2023, it continues. These funds will be used to help Veterans stay in their home, and be safe.
Wisconsin Veterans Village of Appleton- $5000 We have donated a considerable sum of money to this affordable, safe housing for Veterans of any age, with 1-2 & 3 bedroom apartments and hope to do more in the future.
Vet and Friends-$2000 Vet and Friends of Wisconsin, at 100 Capitol Dr. in Appleton provides a free Friday breakfast as well as a free lunch on Wednesday’s. It is a great place for Vets, and their friends to come together and have a meal and friendship.
Old Glory Honor Flight-$8000 many of our Post members have been able to go on the Honor Flight, a highlight for any Veteran and a great way for our Vietnam Veterans who received no welcome home to be appreciated. A recent Honor Flight to New York for Combat Veterans of the recent wars was a great success.
Patriot Guard Riders, Christmas Angels Project- $2500 This group donates Christmas presents to deployed and needy Veteran families in our area.
VA Veterans Housing and Recovery Program of Green Bay-$2500 This program helps homeless Veterans get set up for a successful entry into society and the workforce.
